Our family just returned from a marvelous week at Borgo Calcinaia, which we fell in love with immediately. The farmhouse, with its authentic and charming exterior, was beautifully decorated inside. It had plenty of space for our family to spend time together, while the four bedroom and bath suites gave all of us the privacy we wanted as well. The large and well appointed kitchen was fantastic for our family, especially when we decided to try our Italian cooking skills together. Outside of the house, the grounds were stunning, with a young grove of olive trees, as well as pots full of brightly blooming flowers and a bounty of herbs. Equally impressive were the views: a hillside field of bronze wheat on one side, wooded hills off in the distance on another side, and finally, an unbeatable view of a bright blue lake in the valley far below. The pool was a special treat, being a great place to relax in the morning or cool off and recuperate after a day of touring around Tuscany.
The owners of Borgo Calcinaia, however, made our stay even more delightful. From the minute we arrived, until our last goodbyes, Dennis, Gilly, and their two adorable dogs (Carina and Scotty) made us feel welcome and at home. Gilly has turned Borgo Calcinaia into a horticultural delight for all guests to enjoy. Dennis is extremely knowledgeable about the area and assisted us with excellent restaurant suggestions, travel destination ideas, and also kindly arranged our train tickets for a day trip to Florence. Dennis and Gilly even joined us for a wonderful dinner one evening outside the villa under the stars where we talked and laughed for hours. We could never imagine more warm and inviting hosts.
